Nation’s favourite
100% British potatoes
Walkers Crisps are made from good old British spuds. What makes British potatoes so special? Well, they have brilliant growing conditions for a start. Potatoes love a good drop of rain and in Britain they get up to 154 days (Figure from Metoffice.gov.uk) of it every year! Potatoes also love to nestle in cool, rich soil and by a lucky coincidence Britain’s got loads of that, too. All this means British potatoes are the tastiest ‘taters around. Rain and mud are also perfect for classic British activities – footie, rugby, Glastonbury and Wimbledon just wouldn’t be the same without them. So next time you get stuck into a pack of Walkers Crips just remember every crunch is the best of British!
From field to crisp
Ever wondered, while tucking into a bag of Walkers, how our crisps are made? Well, we’d love to be able to pretend that it’s a terribly complicated process like rocket science, so that you’d be really impressed with how clever we are… But the fact is that making our crisps is fairly simple.
- Plant a potato seed and pray for some good old British weather!
- Pick, and double check it’s a top quality spud
- Wash, peel and slice it
- Cook in SUNSEED® Oil – naturally lower in saturates
- Season with a sprinkle of Walkers magic!
And that’s it. From farmer’s field to your taste buds in five simple steps! We said it wasn’t rocket science…
Our story
Long, long ago (well, the 1880’s) in a Midlands town not so far away (Leicester!), a butcher named Henry Walker opened a new butcher’s shop and for a while things went well... But by 1945 meat was scarce so that Henry branched out and began cooking slices of potato. They sold well and in 1954 the first flavoured crisps were created, Cheese and Onion was born! Henry Walker became Walkers and by the 1980’s, we had loads of great flavours and chose Leicester’s favourite son Gary Lineker to help sell our tasty wares to the world… And the rest, as they say, is history.
Working with farmers
There’s nothing quite like the sights, the sounds (and the smells!) of the British countryside. But who is it that keeps this land so green and pleasant? Our farmers. They’re the unsung heroes who are up at dawn every day, braving everything the British weather can throw at them to produce top quality food. That’s why we’re proud to support our Great British farmers, who supply us with all the potatoes for every single crisp we make. We’ve been working with some of our farming families for 3 generations and they have the know-how to lovingly nurture every spud so that it reaches the peak of perfection. And that’s when they’re ready to become Walkers crisps!
Our carbon commitment
Global warming isn’t cool. That’s why we’ve been working with the Carbon Trust to reduce our carbon footprint. In fact we’re not only one of the first companies to sign up to their Carbon Reduction label – we’re the first in to retain it 2 years later!
The carbon footprint of a product is the total amount of greenhouse gases caused directly and indirectly in the making and transportation of that product. We helped reduce the carbon footprint of Walkers by…
- Only using British potatoes, to cut down food miles
- Improving production line efficiency to reduce gas, electric and water consumption
- Recycling over 90% of our waste
- Reducing the weight of our packaging
- Running delivery lorries on biodiesel and using fuel efficient driving
- Reinvesting money we’ve saved in more environmental initiatives
We’re proud to have the Carbon Reduction label on our packs to show how far we’ve come and how committed we are to keeping up the good work. Find out more at http://www.walkerscarbonfootprint.co.uk
